# mcprouter

> Discover, rank, and call MCP tools with explicit host-owned policy.

# mcprouter

> **Public documentation preview — incomplete.** This draft covers only part of the planned SDK documentation. `@surf-lab/mcprouter` and its optional AI SDK peers remain private and unpublished; no public install, release qualification or live-provider compatibility is claimed. [Start with the development-candidate requirements](/start/install).

`@surf-lab/mcprouter` is a **private, unpublished** Node.js ESM package at `0.0.0-development`. These pages describe a development candidate, not a publicly available npm release or a hosted router. You need a maintainer-supplied, verified archive to follow the [installation guide](/start/install).

The router separates **finding tools** from **permission to call them**. Your application supplies trusted context, policy, servers and (if needed) model adapters. No model preference, tool description or ranking score grants execution.

| I want to… | Start here | Who chooses the model? | Executes a tool? |
| - | - | - | - |
| Make one exact call without a model | [First governed call](/start/first-call) | Nobody | Yes, only after policy permits it |
| Find relevant tools | [Filter tools](/integrate/filter) | Lexical by default; named ranking is opt-in | No |
| Propose and run one action | [Execute an intent](/integrate/execute) | A configured routing model, chosen by the exact target or explicit override | At most one governed call |
| Offer governed tools to an AI SDK host | [AI SDK ToolSet](/integrate/ai-sdk) | The host selects its own `generateText` model | Each generated tool call passes through the router |

For the shared database/billing example, begin at [models, servers and trusted policy](/integrate/models-servers-policies), then [assign models to servers and tools](/integrate/model-bindings). Or [compare the integration paths](/start/choose-integration).

Before connecting services, read [security and trust boundaries](/guides/security-and-trust). Look up the [Router methods](/reference/router) and [outcomes and errors](/reference/results-and-errors) while building a host integration.

These starter pages cover only part of the planned documentation. Transport operations, the complete public type reference, nine tested example families, hosted privacy/search checks and release approval remain outstanding. No live provider or MCP service is supplied by the documentation site.
